Indonesia’s Capital A Melting Pot Of Culture

The United Nations recently recognized Jakarta as the world’s most-populous city. It is located on the island of Java, which is the world’s most populous island. Java is home to more than 150 million people (55-60 percent of Indonesia’s population).

Indonesia, itself, is the fourth most-populous nation in the world with approximately 285 million people. The capital city is home to 42 million people, according to an estimate by the population division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs in its World Urbanisation Prospects 2025 report. The UN estimates that 10 million more people will live in Jakarta by 2050.

Nine out of the 10 most populated cities – Jakarta, Dhaka, Tokyo, New Delhi, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Manila, Kolkata and Seoul — are in Asia. The other city in the top 10 is Cairo. According to the new criteria, Tokyo was the world’s most populous city until around 2010, when it was replaced by Jakarta.

The number of megacities, urban areas with 10 million or more inhabitants, has quadrupled from 8 in 1975 to 33 in 2025. More than half of these cities (19) are in Asia.

Where Is Jakarta

Located on the island of Java, Jakarta is the economic, cultural, and political center of Indonesia. Its business and employment opportunities have attracted migrants from across the Indonesian archipelago, making it a melting pot of many fascinating cultures. The Betawi culture is distinct from those of the Sundanese or Javanese. There is a significant Chinese influence in Betawi culture.

At one time, Jakarta was the headquarters of the Dutch East India Company, as well the Imperial Dutch capital of the Dutch East Indies, when it was known as Batavia.

Most visitors to Jakarta are domestic tourists. The city often serves as a starting point for foreign visitors on their way to Bali, Lombok, Komodo and Yogyakarta. In 2023 about 1.97 million foreign tourists visited the city.
